MOUNTAIN BIKING

<< Region II
biker on a trail

The historic Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail follows the border between Vermont and New York and is the perfect place for a bike ride to enjoy Vermont’s beautiful countryside, natural beauty, and small villages. Encountered along the way are 17 bridges and overpasses of various lengths and designs. It’s passage through farm fields, wetlands, mixed woodlands, and along beautiful streams provide great opportunities for wildlife viewing and bird watching along the way.

The trail surface consists of the original cinder ballast, some gravel and some grassed areas. The wide, flat smooth trail surface and decked bridges make the trail a great ride for cyclists of all abilities. Mountain bikes are recommended over narrow tired bicycles for the trail.

The 19.8 mile long converted railroad bed is divided into two, nearly ten mile sections. The two sections of the trails in Vermont are separated by 15 undeveloped miles in eastern New York State. (not yet developed for recreational use). It follows the old railroad bed of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, connecting Rutland, VT with Albany, NY.

The trail also provides opportunities for hiking, jogging, and horseback riding. It is also a good location when snow conditions allow, for snowmobiling, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. All terrain vehicles are not allowed on the trail at any time.

The trail begins approximately six miles from the park but may be reached by biking paved town roads to the trailhead.
