Jamaica State Park Hosts Whitewater Enthusiasts

Jamaica State Park is the center of activity for the West River whitewater events each April and September as the US Army Corps of Engineers releases water from its Ball Mountain Dam. The controlled water releases produce ideal rafting, kayaking and canoeing opportunities on the West River in southern Vermont. The release is usually held on the fourth weekend of April and on the fourth Saturday in September.
These events draw whitewater enthusiasts from around the northeast as kayakers, canoeists and river rafters all join in the fun of paddling the class II to class IV rapids. Thousands of people come to the park to watch the action on the West River and hike along the 3 mile long former rail bed hiking trail that gently winds up the steep valley.
Concessionaires stationed at the park’s day parking area vend food, equipment and gear. Shuttle services are provided for both events. In the spring, a contracted service provides rides for a fee from the park day use area to the top of the Ball Mountain Dam. Shuttles leave every ½ hour, rider-permitting, beginning at 9am. In the fall, Jamaica State Park provides a shuttle service up the West River Rail trail from the day parking area to the Cobb Brook bridge. Shuttles operate as needed 8am-4pm for a fee.
Entry to the park is just $3.00 per adult and $2.00 per child and is collected at the park entrance. Camping space at Jamaica State Park fills quickly in advance for event weekends, so book your stay now.
